“Her parents must have gone to Montana,” they whispered, some admiringly, some with fascinated pity. When New Yorkers fled the Eruption, it was to find something more than what the city could provide for them. Some had retreated to well-fed, well-off places like East Asia or Europe, or warm, spiritual places, like New Mexico. They were sometimes drier, sometimes colder, than New York, but they were good lots to end up with after fleeing the city. Only the poorest went someplace like Montana.
