May Trope Mayhem is a multi-fandom/original creation event open to writers, artists, and creators of all kinds! We’ve put together a list of 30 of our favorite tropes (plus one free day!), one per day through the month of May, and we encourage creators to join us for this month of fun tropey mayhem.

Our goal is to promote motivation and help with habit building, so we’re encouraging authors to keep their ficlets under 1,000 words, artists to stick to making just a sketch, gif makers to only do a single image, etc., as applicable to whatever you’re making.

This event is primarily held on Tumblr, but you’re welcome to participate anywhere Duck Prints Press has an account (you can see all our current platforms here) and we’ll keep our eyes on our tag everywhere!

How can you participate? It’s easy! There’s just a few simple rules:

  • write a ficlet or a poem, create art, make a gif, or create any other content that you want, aligned with the prompt for the day!
  • post your correctly tagged fills to Tumblr, and we’ll reblog them! We’ll reskeet works on Bluesky, retoot those on Mastodon, you get the idea. Note: we do not use Twitter.
  • you must tag warnings such as gore, MCD, sexual content, etc., so that people can make informed decisions!
  • please also tag fandom and ship, so people can find what interests them!
  • we ask that you put the tags at the top of your post, so they’re easy to find.
  • if you write more than 1k words and post the whole text on Tumblr or wherever, please use a read more if the platform allows.
  • if you create something with NSFW content or potentially triggering material, please put the entire work under a read more.

Ping us (duckprintspress) or tag your creations “#may trope mayhem” and so we can find them! We’ll reblog all fills that follow the above rules and are posted between May 1st and June 8th, 2024.

If you post to AO3, you can also add them to our collection there!

You don’t have to sign up for May Trope Mayhem, just post your fills. You don’t have to be a member of the Press nor do you have to be following us. You don’t have to be part of a specific fandom. We’re open to all ships, genres, formats, etc.! You don’t have to post fills on the corresponding day, though we ask that if you’re creating for a day that hasn’t happened yet, please wait for that day to post.

Participating in May Trope Mayhem? Want to chat fandom, books, creation, and more? Join our Book Lover’s Discord Server!

This is a low-pressure event, held in good fun, and we look forward to seeing what you create!

Coming Soon: May Trope Mayhem 2024!

A graphic with a pale blue background. The header reads "May Trope Mayhem: A Multi-Fandom and Original Work Creation Challenge 2024 List." Below this is a blurred out area with a swirl of thin black lines, with the word "SOON!" written in large bold letters. The Duck Prints Press logo, surrounded by rainbow duck prints on two sides, with the white dux mascot on the right and the words "we print diversity" below that, is in the lower right corner of the image.

It’s almost time for May Trope Mayhem!

What is May Trope Mayhem? It’s Duck Prints Press’s annual multi-fandom/original work creation event! Our creators have shared their favorite tropes, and we’ve picked 30 (+1 free day!), one per day of May to make an awesome, fun, diverse list of prompts to inspire your creativity. Come May 1st, we invite everyone to create a ficlet, artwork, gif set, photo montage, or whatever else they feel like, inspired by the trope of the day. We’re open to any fandom or no fandom at all, original characters and old faves, any ship (yes even that one) or no ship or reader inserts or, or, or… basically, if you can imagine it, we can accommodate it!

This year marks our fourth-annual May Trope Mayhem. Curious about the event? You can learn some by checking out our previous three years!

The rules for 2024 will be about the same as in the past, so the only big change will be in the tropes – some are repeats, some are not. And of course day 31 is still a free day – we’d love to know YOUR favorite trope, especially if it it doesn’t end up our list for this year!

The 2024 list goes public on May 1st. Mark your calendars, tell yours friends, and get ready to create with us! And follow us on social media to make sure you don’t miss a thing!

Backers on Patreon can see the list early! It’s up now – become a backer and check it out.

Prompt-a-Duck Masterpost: Feb 22, 2022

(a couple days late this time, sorry!)

Welcome to our latest Prompt-A-Duck masterpost, the weekly low stress prompt event run on the Duck Prints Press server for all of our authors and artists!

As an aside, we’ve made an AO3 collection where, once we get a spare few minutes, we’ll be making sure all the Prompt-A-Duck fills can be accessed.

This week, we had one word prompt and one AU prompt to choose from:

1. sybarite: a person who loves expensive things and pleasure

2. “We had a really bad break-up three hundred years ago, but neither of us realized the other was immortal until we met today while shopping for groceries” AU. Credit: https://dailyau.tumblr.com/post/667209828751572992/we-had-a-really-bad-break-up-three-hundred-years

Results:

Sarnakh: https://archiveofourown.org/works/37418728

Lucy K.R.: https://www.patreon.com/posts/63091773 (CW: a dead vampire victim and mention of hunting pigeons)

Zylaa: https://archiveofourown.org/works/37357432/chapters/93218782 (CW: mild references to past sexual activity)

As always, if you enjoyed their work, please give our authors some love!

Prompt-a-Duck Masterpost: Feb 19, 2022

Time for the second week of our Prompt-a-Duck, the weekly low stress prompt event run on the Duck Prints Press server for all of our authors and artists!

This week’s prompts:

  1. Hatpin panic (or hatpin peril). All kind of needle craft also welcome, as this prompt was spawned by a discussion about the peril of little old ladies with knitting needles. If you want to read more on this phenomenon, follow this link: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/hatpin-peril-terrorized-men-who-couldnt-handle-20th-century-woman-180951219/ (CW: sexual harassment, period typical sexism).
  2. meet-cute or meet-ugly featuring the most awkward gift you can think of. Courtesy of a discussion in our general chat, this didn‘t have to be Valentine Day centered, but this prompt was spawned by an image of Valentine themed toilet paper, so make of that what you will.

And here are our results for this week:

Rebekah: https://rhosyn-du.tumblr.com/post/676497679679946753/by-the-pricking-of-my-thumbs (CW: animal harm, sexual assault, character death, implied murder)

Lucy K. R.: https://www.patreon.com/posts/62755250 (CW: violence, period typical sexism)

Thanks for participating and if you liked what you read, please let our authors know and consider giving us a like or a follow!

Prompt-a-Duck Masterpost: Feb 12, 2022

Prompt-A-Duck is a low pressure weekly prompt challenge run on the Duck Prints Press discord server, open to all of our authors and artists. The prompts are issued every Friday, and result masterposts go up on Saturdays.

The rules are simple: Create something inspired by our weekly prompts, either one or both. It can be an original creation or a fanwork. Art, writing, digital graphics or whatever else strikes people’s fancy are all welcome. There’s no minimum or maximum word count and we actively encourage thinking outside of the box, so the result may only be tangential to the prompt.

Prompt-A-Duck, theme week 1:

1. Epiphany

2. Thunderstorm

This week‘s submissions:

1. Puck has written a prequel for a character featuring in one of our upcoming anthologies: https://theleakypen.tumblr.com/post/675635302441844736/written-for-the-prompt-1-epiphany-2

2. Satu wrote a little Encanto OneShot: https://archiveofourown.org/works/37009849

Please check out these stories and let our authors know if you enjoyed them!

Writer Self-Challenge Bingo

Usually, writing bingos are either fandom-specific, ship-specific, or linked to certain themes or tropes. A couple months ago, we at Duck Prints Press got to talking – what if there was a “fulfill this challenge!” style bingo aimed at writers? Instead of squares for tropes or ships or kinks, the squares for this bingo are writing challenges, such as “write x words in a sitting,” “participate in a sprint,” or “draw a map or floorplan for a location in your story.” We’ve been developing it on and off ever since, and now we’re ready to share the results!

We now have a list of 100 writing challenges (you can see the full list here), ranging from pretty darn easy to really hard (but we haven’t rated their difficulty – what’s easy for one writer will be hard for another, so a difficulty rating would be meaningless). We pre-generated a few cards, just for fun…

Graphic of a 5 x 5 bingo card with writing in each square. The card is entitled "Writer Self-Challenge Bingo" And the columns of the bingo card are labeled B I N G and O. The squares are:
top row, left to right: read a book on your "to read" pile; write a story in a modern setting; use a word that has at least 10 letters correctly in a sentence; participate in a sprint; participate in a writing challenge (bingo, bang, NaNo, Kinktober, etc.)
Second row: create an OC, create a profile for an original character; write for a ship you've never written for before; make a list of ten names for use in a future story; write 1,666 words in a day.
Third row: write 1,000 words in a day; write a fandom crossover or fusion story; Free!; draw a piece of fanart (we don't care if you think you're bad at art, do it anyway); delete that thing you wrote and hate and that brings you guilt.
Fourth row: write for 20 minutes; that thing you've been avoiding? work specifically on it; write about a character with whom you share no identities; use alpha/beta/omega dynamics in a story; that grammar rule you've never been quite sure about? research and read about it 'til you're sure.
bottom/fifth row: write fanfiction of your own original work; write pwp; write a story in a science fiction setting; join a writing-related discord; write a vignette.
Graphic of a 5 x 5 bingo card with writing in each square. The card is entitled "Writer Self-Challenge Bingo" And the columns of the bingo card are labeled B I N G and O. The squares are:
Top/first row: send a prompt to a writer friend; delete that thing you wrote and hate and that brings you guilt; answer one comment a day that readers have left for you; write about a character with whom you share no identities; write a story exactly one paragraph long
Second row: write a self-indulgent scene - anything, just because you want to; write a story exactly one sentence long; write a story in a science fiction setting; participate in three sprints in one day; write a story in a fantasy setting
Third/middle row: leave one comment a day on fics you read; use a word that has at least 10 letters correctly in a sentence; free!; write a story in first person pov; sprint for 15 minutes.
Fourth row: alpha read for another writer, or ask a writer to alpha for you; write 2,500 words in one day; write a fandom crossover or fusion story; sprint for 1 hour; that story you're stuck on? write 500 words of what definitely WOULDN'T happen next.
Bottom/fifth row: request a prompt from your followers/subscribers and fill it; write 500 words on a story you've been meaning to write but haven't started yet; sprint for 10 minutes; write a polyship; use alpha/beta/omega dynamics in a story
Graphic of a 5 x 5 bingo card with writing in each square. The card is entitled "Writer Self-Challenge Bingo" And the columns of the bingo card are labeled B I N G and O. The squares are:
Top row: write 556 words in a day; sprint for 30 minutes; writer a reader insert; write 500 words of dialogue; create a drabble (exactly 100 words!)
Second row: gift someone a fic they'll love; subvert a trope; create a profile for an original character; create an oc, write a vignette
third/middle row: use alpha/beta/omega dynamics in a story; sprint for 15 minutes; free!; write 500 words of description; write pwpw
Fourth row: write for 20 minutes; write a self-indulgent scene - anything, just because you want to; flash fiction! write a full story under 1,000 words in one sitting; write a story or fanfic inspired by your favorite childhood cartoon, book, or media; send a prompt to a writer friend
Bottom/fifth row: make a list of ten names for use in a future story; write 500 words on a story you've been meaning to write but haven't started yet; write for a fandom you've never created for before; write your notp; write an original story (NOT fanfic)
Graphic of a 5 x 5 bingo card with writing in each square. The card is entitled "Writer Self-Challenge Bingo" And the columns of the bingo card are labeled B I N G and O. The squares are:
top row: write a fix-it for some piece of media you hated; find a fandom with under 500 fics on AO3 and write for it; gift someone a fic they'll love; write at least 500 words a day for 5 days in a row; that story you're stuck on? write 500 words of what definitely WOULDN'T happen next
Second row: write somplace other than your usual writing spot; write 500 words of description; participate in a sprint; write about a character who shares one or more identities with you; that thing you've been avoiding? work specifically on it.
Middle/third row: flash fiction! write a full story under 1,000 words in one sitting; gen fic challenge; free!; create an outline for a scene, story, or plot arc; write a fandom crossover or fusion story.
Fourth row: sprint for 15 minutes; write a story in second person pov, write for a fandom you've never written for before; use a word that has at least 10 letters correctly in a sentence; write 500 words in one sitting.
Bottom/fifth row: write a story inspired by artwork (if it's fanart, ask permission!); send a prompt to a writer friend; write 500 words of dialogue; write fanfiction of your own original work; alpha read for another writer, or ask a writer to alpha for you.

…or, you can use this link to generate your own!

A screen capture of a website graphic that reads "Writer Self-Challenge Bingo! Click the button below to generate your own unique bingo card. Generate card!" There is no actual button, it's all a screen capture.

We are not running this as a formal event. Sadly, we just don’t have time right now to make rules, handle sign ups, track participants, create custom bingo cards, etc. However, we don’t think we need to! Everything you need to run your personal writer self-challenge bingo is right in this post – if you’re the kind of writer who’d find something like this helpful, we encourage you to use one of our pre-gen cards, make your own, or even just use this idea as a launching-off point from which to make a challenge that fits your brain.

And, if you do choose to use a bingo card, and end up writing and posting any fic, we encourage you to add it to our AO3 collection, and/or tag us so we can reblog/retweet/boost it!

As long as you’re writing using strategies that help you, the rules don’t matter, so get out there and write that thing!

(and, if you have ideas for more writing challenges we can add to our list, we’d love to hear them, and we’ll potentially add them to our bingo card generator list!)
